Theodore Storm, The Second 2,500 Teu Container Vessel, Christened At Jurong Shipyard

Theodore Storm, The Second 2,500 Teu Container Vessel, Christened At Jurong Shipyard

The second 2,500 TEU newbuild from Jurong Shipyard’s latest containership series was named Theodor Storm on October 29, 2004.

Owned by established German shipping company Reederei Karl Schlüter (RKS), Theodor Storm is the second containership in the yard’s 2,500 TEU series, following the successful delivery of sistership Thomas Mann in October last year.

Built according to Jurong Shipyard’s proprietary design, Theodor Storm, like sister vessel Thomas Mann, is one of the yard’s largest and most sophisticated containerships to-date. Measuring 213m x 32.2.m x 16.5m, the vessel is capable of achieving high container intake at high service speeds of up to 23 knots. With a total storage capacity of 2,586 TEU, the ship is equipped with 400 TEU reefer containers, with the ability to stow 1,628 TEU on deck and 958 TEU in the cargo holds, including dangerous goods in closed freight containers.

Theodor Storm was named by Lady Sponsor Ms Nicole Busskamp in a ceremony attended by distinguished guests from RKS and Pacific Carriers Limited, together with senior management of Jurong Shipyard. Representatives from the three partnering companies also marked the occasion with a toast to the vessel’s prosperity and success when it begins trading under the charter of shipping company Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC).

Expressing his confidence in Jurong Shipyard’s technical expertise, RKS’s Managing Director Mr Ole Marten said, “For a shipowner, the most important issue about a new vessel is the question – whether it will meet all promised technical parameters. As we have experienced in the first vessel, the Thomas Mann, we know that the vessel is built according to very good craftsmanship along with high quality and that all parameters like speed and stability are perfectly met.”

PCL’s Executive Director Mr Tan Chin Hee lauded Jurong Shipyard for “constructing this splendid vessel with the usual high quality and professionalism”. Affirming PCL’s close association with Jurong Shipyard over the years, Mr Tan added that the recent newbuildings of Theodor Storm and Thomas Mann have further strengthened this strategic partnership.

Mr Lee Yeok Hoon, Jurong Shipyard’s Executive Director, also noted the “positive synergy” enjoyed by the three companies. “Such a spirit has been crucial to the success of this project and signifies the close working relationship between Reederei Karl Schlüter, Pacific Carriers and Jurong Shipyard,” said Mr Lee.
